UFO (Ur Future Obsession)
Company FOREO

Why is this project worthy of an award?
Face masks were 2017’s biggest beauty trend in skincare, officially the category’s number one searched term in Google and accounting for more than 40% of online sales for beauty companies worldwide. While face masks have always been popular in the beauty industry, some of the core inefficiencies included limited treatment penetration, poor facial coverage and the excessive time spent using them. For the last four years, FOREO’s team of designers and engineers have been developing a more efficient and affordable way to get at-home results. FOREO, short for “For Everyone”, implemented the latest and most innovative technologies available – treatments that can cost thousands of dollars at clinics and spas – and incorporated them into a smart mask, the UFO (Ur Future Obsession), that fits in the palm of one’s hand. The smart mask is a mask in terms of its traditional application, a high-quality at-home skincare treatment, short of only having a salon facial, but at much greater convenience. FOREO’s UFO is a smart mask as it addresses two of the most important aspects of a mask: effectiveness and the duration of the treatment. Instead of the 20-30 minutes spent for a traditional mask treatment, the FOREO UFO treatment lasts only 90 seconds, rendering the application significantly more feasible for the consumer’s lifestyle. The UFO is a first of its kind with tech integration and a treatment designed to achieve results. UFO smart masks are activated by the device's HIT (Hyper Infusion Technology) and RGB LED (red-green-blue-LED light treatment), allowing for an effective treatment in only 90 seconds, providing mask benefits in a previously unthinkable, convenient format. The UFO combines heating to open pores, T-SONICTM pulsations to instantly infuse active ingredients more deeply into the skin and cryotherapy to seal the active ingredients and firm the skin. Additionally, the device includes a range of LED light therapy treatments to offer three photo-facials including anti-aging (red LED), brightening (green LED) and anti-acne (blue LED). Each pre-programmed treatment can be chosen via iOS or Android device and incorporates an optimal temperature and pulsation intensity for maximum effect and a soothing facial massage. The topical element with the active ingredients is placed on the device which uses a specific protocol to activate each mask pad in a different way to ensure effectiveness. Contrary to a traditional mask which is simply placed on the face, the UFO and smart mask is passed across the face through the duration of the treatment, increasing the effectiveness of all the ingredients and penetration.

The UFO-activated Smart Mask treatments are made from soft micro-fiber infused with plant and fruit extracts, concentrated botanical oils and natural flower water. Each mask is paired with a pre-programmed UFO treatment routine to boost their effects. There are two masks currently available, including the “Make My Day” mask and the “Call It A Night” Mask. The “Make My Day” mask features Hyaluronic Acid and Red Algae for deep hydration combined with pollution protection for radiant skin. This UFO treatment begins 30-seconds of Thermo-Therapy and Red LED light to prep the skin and open pores. The next 30-seconds integrate T-SonicTM pulsations to heighten the absorption of the mask essence. The final 30-seconds switch to a Green LED treatment and lower frequency pulsations to even skin tone and add a radiant boost. The “Call It A Night” mask features ginseng and olive oil to nourish and revitalize – a formula that replenishes skin overnight. The treatment begins with 30 seconds of higher-frequency T-SONICTM pulsations combined with thermo-therapy and Red LED light to infuse the essence beneath the skin’s surface. T-SONICTM pulsations then switch to a lower frequency, with the Red LED light retained and Thermo-therapy disabled to focus on enhanced blood circulation and restoring the skin’s elasticity. Through the app, accessing the right activation protocol is as simple as taking a picture of the smart mask. The app recognizes the mask visually and readies the mask-specific protocol for the user to store it on one of the UFO’s eight routine memories - very similar to a favorite playlist. In addition, the app will allow for direct tailoring of some of the UFO features such as T-SonicTM pulsations, LED light intensities, or temperature profiles, making sure that everybody can find the perfect treatment for their specific preference and need. Another innovation is that FOREO has decided to render the UFO platform open. FOREO is speaking to a select number of leading skincare brands, with the aim of bringing more choices to consumers, and allowing them to use the brand, or product of their preference in the UFO smart mask format - at the convenience of 90 seconds. The UFO has several other mutual benefits expected across all of FOREO’s inventions, including a medical grade silicone body which is 100% antimicrobial and antibacterial, plus a waterproof design for use in the bath and USB-charging for added convenience.

Why is this project worthy of an award?
UV Sense is the first battery-free wearable electronic UV sensor and provides consumers with crucial information about their individual ultraviolet (UV) exposure levels. can store up to three months of data. The wearable is less than two millimeters thick, nine millimeters in diameter and can store up to three months' of data. UV Sense is powered by the user’s mobile phone and activated by UVA and UVB rays and is the first wearable electronic UV sensor powered without a battery. The wearable has an accompanying mobile app, available on both iOS and Android, which translates and transfers data from the sensor using Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled technology. The app delivers consumer-friendly information detailing when the wearer should be mindful of UV exposure. Data is included in a profile within the app that outlines a user’s exposure levels. Sun-safety habits – like spending time in the shade or reapplying sunscreen – are encouraged with facts about sun exposure and additional tips for protection. UV Sense draws from research L’Oréal conducted in conjunction with MC10, Inc., a leading wearable technology company, and professor John Rogers at Northwestern University, through his portfolio of intellectual property (IP) and innovation around flexible, stretchable electronics. This research has provided valuable insights into the human skin, such as the calculations of personal daily safe UV doses around the skin phototype and minimal erythema dose.
What else would you like to share about your design? Why is it unique and innovative?
UV Sense is uniquely designed to be worn on an accessory or on the user’s thumbnail. When adhered to the thumbnail, UV Sense should be worn for up to two weeks before being reapplied. The wearable is less than two millimeters thick, nine millimeters in diameter and can store up to three months' of data. The suggestion of wear on the thumbnail, or guidance in placing on an accessory, is for UV Sense to receive maximum UV exposure and therefore provide the most accurate estimate of UV exposure, based on the app's algorithm and user-entered information. The emphasis on the intersection of design and technology creates a personalized and seamless technological experience for the user. UV Sense pairs beauty tech with effective design to enhance consumers’ wellbeing without distracting from everyday life.

Verdera Collection
Company Kohler Co.
Introduction Date January 10, 2017
Project Website
Why is this project worthy of an award?
Personal grooming is an important part of daily life. Many tasks considered essential to proper hygiene and appearance take place in the bathroom, in front of the mirror – oral care, skin care, hair care, applying makeup, hair removal, etc. And appropriate lighting is crucial in this space. Kohler addressed this need directly with the creation of the Verdera Lighted Cabinet collection – bringing true grooming task lighting to the bathroom. Utilizing innovative lighting as well as smart placement, the Verdera enhanced cabinets, and mirrors with integrated task lighting transmit light through LED bulbs as well as a light guide to deliver premium lighting at a consistent level. Many task-oriented lighting options on the market today are inconsistent in lighting output, which shows up in “hot spots” (too much light in one certain spot) or “shadows” (spacing in the light bar that does not emit sufficient lighting). Both of these scenarios can cause undesired reflections and shadows on the user’s face and head.

The Verdera enhanced cabinet features the option of a flip-out flat mirror or magnifying mirror, along with slow-close functionality to eliminate slamming. The Verdera family of cabinets is available in single-, two- and three-door configurations with adjustable glass shelves for ample storage space within the cabinets. To accommodate various bathroom sizes, this 30-inch tall cabinet is offered in dimension ranging from 15-by-30 inches, ideal for small spaces, up to 40-by-30 inches, for larger rooms and expansive storage space. The new mirrors and enhanced cabinets with integrated task lighting join the popular Verdera family of basic medicine cabinets and wall mirrors, all constructed with rust-free aluminum – ideal for moist bathroom environments – and offers high-end finishing touches such as slow-close hinges, which prevents the door from slamming, and interior mirrored surfaces without the high-end cabinet price tag.
