When Charles Best was a public high school teacher in the Bronx in 2000 making photocopies of Little House on the Prairie, he decided to start a program where the public could help buy books, art supplies, and other materials all too often paid for by teachers out of their pockets. Two decades later, DonorsChoose is available to educators in every public school in the United States, where they can post projects online, giving individuals the chance to decide what to fund. But as the DonorsChoose philanthropic model becomes more common, it becomes more of a challenge to engage users and companies in giving back in steady streams. At this session inside the DonorsChoose headquarters, partnerships manager Orly Michaeli will home in on organizations leading the way in philanthropic engagement, like Macy’s and the College Football Playoff tournament.
